How to Get a Document Notarized on a Weekend in Virginia

Most banks won’t notarize on Saturdays. Courthouses are closed. The UPS Store may or may not have a notary on duty, and the wait can be long. So what do you do when you have a power of attorney, an affidavit, or a real estate document that needs a stamp before Monday?

Here’s how weekend notarization actually works in Northern Virginia, step by step.

1. Identify the type of notarization you need

Most personal documents in Virginia need one of two acts:

  • Acknowledgment — you confirm to the notary that you signed the document willingly. Used for deeds, powers of attorney, and trust documents.
  • Jurat — you sign the document in front of the notary and swear that the contents are true. Used for affidavits and sworn statements.

Your document usually has a notarial certificate at the bottom that tells the notary which act to perform. If it doesn’t, you (not the notary) get to choose.

2. Don’t sign the document in advance

This is the most common mistake. For an acknowledgment, you can sign before the notary arrives, but for a jurat, you must sign in front of the notary. To keep things simple, leave the document unsigned until your appointment.

3. Have a valid government-issued photo ID ready

Virginia notaries are required to verify your identity. Acceptable IDs include:

  • Driver’s license (Virginia or out-of-state)
  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • State-issued ID
  • Military ID
  • Permanent resident card

The ID must be unexpired. A photocopy will not work.

4. Book a mobile notary for the weekend

  • Verify your ID

  • Witness your signature
